On Saturday, I took a break from the studio. My hubby and I have been wanting to check out a place we read about in the local paper. Our destination was a two-hundred-year-old Chester County barn. This was not just any barn though. It was a barn filled to the rafters with used books: antique books, newer books, rare books...five levels of books!
The business was started in 1934 in Wilmington, DE. It was moved to the barn in 1946 and became known as Baldwin's Book Barn. It houses more than 300,000 used and rare books, as well as prints, manuscripts, maps, and other collectibles. Stepping inside of it's 12-inch thick stone walls is like stepping back in time.
The barn has wonderful arches.
I think this was an old grain scale.
The grounds are so beautiful.
The was a magnificent wood stove in the rare books room.
Isn't that door incredible?
There were so many interesting things to see.
At every turn, you could find a quiet nook to enjoy a treasured find.
I found a 112-year-old edition of a book of birds.
It has the most beautiful color plates.
Please feel free to use the birds in your art. I photographed rather than scanned, as I did not want to damage the book's binding.
It's time for me to get back to work now! Have a wonderful day.
Until next time,
